The Washington Eastern Railroad (reporting mark?WER) is a short-line freight railroad operating in eastern Washington on a portion of the state-owned Palouse River and Coulee City (CW) branch, running roughly from Cheney through Medical Lake and Four Lakes to Coulee City. It took over operations in 2018 after the previous operator, the Eastern Washington Gateway Railroad, ceased service, and was later acquired by Jaguar Transport Holdings in 2020.
WER primarily hauls grain, agricultural products, and chemicals, while also moving other commodities such as steel on the Geiger Spur near Spokane. It interchanges with BNSF Railway at Cheney and supports local shippers with freight service, railcar storage, and access to the national rail network.
The railroad’s operation helps connect eastern Washington’s agricultural producers with broader markets, making it an important link in the region’s freight transportation system.
